The Freedom Hub Ltd hasn't added a story.
We are now trying to stretch to $30,000!
We are so excited to have reached our initial goal of $18,000 - but we would really love to reach our stretch goal of $30,000. This would mean we can have a bigger space in Parramatta and that we can help reduce our waiting list of survivors. Please contribute now to help us get there.
Freedom is a basic Human Right
Freedom of choice, freedom to work, freedom of movement, and freedom of agency are basic human rights.
Imagine a world where everyone could live with this freedom. Imagine if everyone in Australia could have this freedom.
With over 41,000 people in slavery in Australia, we have a lot of work to do.
The Freedom Hub works to end slavery in our country and we support people who have experienced it, recover from their trauma, rebuild their life, and train for long-term employment.
The Problem - There are big Barriers to overcome in Rebuilding Life after Slavery
1. Many modern slavery survivors in Australia are migrants, refugees, or asylum seekers. Many have Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds, no friends, family, or support, and little understanding of Australia. Due to being enslaved, most have serious complex trauma, many have never managed money, caught public transport, or studied before. These are all large barriers to work and self-confidence.
2. Standard education and training in large groups are often difficult due to the barriers of complex PTSD and anxiety. It can be fearful walking into a room of strangers and Australian slang, sense of humour, and culture can be very difficult to understand. Falling behind in class work can add to their anxiety.
3. In Sydney, of the 121 in our care, over 80% live in Parramatta LGA. Our current Survivor School room is Ultimo Sydney, so there is the added barrier of expensive transport a long way from home.
Our Solution - Many of these barriers can easily be overcome.
The Freedom Hub runs personalised one-to-one training with one of our ‘education coaches’, develops their confidence, teaches them English, local community knowledge, peer support, personal life skills, work-ready skills, office skills, computer skills, money management as well as learning about Australian culture, transport, politics, history, and community services.
Running small or individualised classes locally will:
1. reduce the fear and expense of traveling to the city
2. ensure many more survivors engage in class because it is close to home
3. more survivors will be identified as we work with more local community services
4. more volunteers can be trained to support our work because they too no longer want to travel to the city.
5. more local businesses can employ survivors &/or support our work
Once anxiety is reduced, trauma is managed and they are ready, we then place them with safe employment partners or larger training programs that suit their skills or dreams.
What we Need
This campaign is to help us move from our current small Ultimo location to Parramatta LGA. The result will be:
1. our current survivors will be more engaged and more regular in their coaching classes.
2. this in turn will speed up the process of their recovery
3. local community services are more likely to refer identified survivors to our service
4. as a result we will be able to help more victims
5. we will have better collaboration with community services and front-line workers who are often the first people to identify victims of slavery.
Your Impact
Your support can provide life-changing opportunities, provide essential services to the vulnerable and drive success in the lives of people who had lost all hope.
We could spend the next 6 months slowly saving funds from our social enterprises and donors, or with your help. We can be moved in and start classes by August. #smallchangebigeffect
Your donation will fast-track the 100 local survivors we already have into recovery and jobs. Your impact will be immediate. Plus there will be a long-term legacy left as we identify and rebuild the lives of many, many more survivors in the year to come.
Where will the $18,000 be spent?
The $18,000 we need now will be used to rent a classroom to run our small classes in as well as have a lounge area for relaxing and reading.
If we reach our stretch goal of $30,000 we will find a larger space so we can also hold trauma-informed yoga and group wellness classes.
If we don't raise $18,000 in this campaign we will have to stay where we are and we won't be as effective as we could be.
Your impact will empower change, transform lives, and help survivors of slavery in the Parramatta LGA much faster than we could do it alone.
Our Partnership with You
Whether you donate $20 or $2000 you will become a Freedom Hub Partner and receive regular updates on the Survivor School and how your impact is changing lives. You will be invited to our events (like our 10-year Gala Dinner in early '24) and if you choose a reward we will send that by mid-August.
