Help Support Native Pollinators in Lake Macquarie
The Urban Hum Tiny Forest will provide a dense pocket of habitat for native wildlife, absorb carbon, and offer an inviting and educational place for locals to enjoy. This complete, yet small ecosystem will cool the local environment, improve soil health, and provide a sanctuary for insects, birds, lizards and mammals.
The Urban Hum Tiny Forest project is truly people powered. Your donation will help fund the project from start to finish. You can get further involved by offering up your skills, joining the planting days, and by promoting this crowdfunding campaign to your friends and neighbours.
Our native species, including vital pollinators face habitat loss due to urbanisation (land clearing) and climate change, endangering ecosystems and food security. Additionally, with the recent detection of the Varroa mite, all European honeybee populations in Lake Macquarie have been eradicated. While this has been heartbreaking for our recreational beekeepers and devastating for our beekeeping and agricultural industries, it provides a unique window of opportunity to support and study our native bees in the Hunter region.
The Urban Hum Tiny Forest will create a Tiny Forest, providing a sanctuary for pollinators and do our bit to combat climate change.
Some of the challenges in getting these Tiny Forests planted in our area have been in securing land and resources, and community support is crucial.
Your support will help nurture pollinators, improve ecosystems, and combat climate change.

A Place for Hope, Connection, and Inspiration
The Urban Hum Tiny Forest will initially consist of around 550 native trees and shrubs. Clever landscaping using the Miyawaki planting method will improve the soil, helping it to naturally retain water and supporting the forest to establish and grow quickly. The tiny forest will feature enduring signage and an outdoor classroom – a space for relaxation, reflection, and learning.
Reaching our goal of $2,500 will enable us to purchase the necessary plants and soil enrichment products.
Grant funding and in-kind support will cover the remaining project expenses.
This project is a collaboration between The Groundswell Collective and Urban Hum, and will be delivered with support from our project partners including- Agility Professional Tree Services, Jemena, Carmen's Bee for Trees, and Earthwatch Australia.
FAQ’S
Where does my money go?
To The Groundswell Collective to purchase plants and soil improvement materials to create the Tiny Forest.
Who is The Groundswell Collective?
A locally based not-for-profit organisation, committed to supporting our community to be more resilient and regenerative.
What if we raise more funds?
The funds will be held by The Groundswell Collective to kick start future Tiny Forests in the Hunter Region and to provide educational workshops.
Will I be able to visit the Urban Hum Tiny Forest?
Yes, there will be publicly available education programs, citizen science data collection days and an annual open day where people can visit the forest, learn about it and see its progress.
Can a Tiny Forest be on Private or Public Land?
Whether planted on private or public land the benefits to the environment from a Tiny Forest are the same. Private landowners who host a Tiny Forest site commit to ensuring its longevity. As the planting consists of all native species, they are protected and cannot be removed without consent.
What if I have a public or private space in mind for a future Tiny Forest?
If you believe you know of a potential Tiny Forest site that is - accessible by earthwork machinery, approx. 200m2, has no overhead power lines or underground services and with no pre-existing tree canopy cover, you can send the details through to info@thegroundswell.org.au and it will be reviewed.
We would love to grow the Tiny Forest movement, so if you are local business or landholder and would like be further involved, please contact - info@thegroundswell.org.au
