Barrbunin Beek Aboriginal Corporation hasn't added a story.

Barrbunin Beek Aboriginal Gathering Place
didn’t start as another tick-box initiative

It started with people showing up for each other
and grew into something much bigger.

Now, we’re turning that foundation into real opportunities for
our community to lead, work, and thrive.

What started as a handful of men trying to better their lives—showing up for one another, having honest conversations, and finding strength in connection—began to grow into something much bigger.

From those early days, Barrbunin Beek Aboriginal Gathering Place was born.

Barrbunin Beek means “Happy Place” in Woi Wurrung language.
It’s not just a name—it’s a responsibility. Every day, we work to create a space where our community can feel connection, belonging, and strength in culture.

Today, Barrbunin Beek has grown into a place that supports and connects thousands of Aboriginal people each year—a space where culture is lived, shared, and celebrated. A place where people can come to feel safe, strong, and grounded in who they are.

This growth has been made possible through Banyule City Council, who have backed the vision and helped build a strong foundation for community.

But now, we are ready for the next step.

Moving Towards Self-Determination

While external support has helped us grow, our vision has always been grounded in self-determination.

We want to build something that is sustainable, community-led, and creates real opportunities for our people—not just now, but into the future.

This next stage is about activating Barrbunin Beek as a social enterprise:

  • Creating cultural workshops and experiences
  • Providing economic and development opportunities for Aboriginal facilitators and community members to lead and share knowledge
  • Building economic independence and long-term resilience
  • Strengthening our ability to continue supporting community without relying solely on external funding

Launching our Caring for Country Series

A key part of this next chapter is the Launching our Caring for Country Series at Barrbunin Beek.

This space connects people to Country through native plants, cultural knowledge, and hands-on practice.

We are seeking support to deliver a four-part workshop series, which will be delivered both:

  • At Barrbunin Beek, and
  • As cultural immersion experiences in schools and community settings

Session 1: Introduction to Food, Fibre, Medicine – Building your own garden

Session 2: Food Workshop – How to utilise native foods

Session 3: Fibre & Weaving Workshop – Storytelling & learning to weave

Session 4: Bush Medicine Workshop – The land is the medicine

These sessions are designed to be adaptable, allowing us to bring meaningful cultural experiences directly into schools while also hosting deeper, place-based learning at Barrbunin Beek.

How the Funding Will Be Used

We are seeking to raise $5000 through sponsorship to pilot and deliver this next stage.

With your support as a sponsor, you will help us:

  • Employ Aboriginal facilitators to design and deliver workshops and school immersions
  • Create culturally safe employment and leadership pathways for community members
  • Deliver both onsite sessions and offsite school programs

Your sponsorship directly supports self-determination through employment, cultural leadership, and knowledge sharing, while contributing to meaningful, community-led impact.

Stretch Goal: Growing the Impact

If we reach our stretch goal of $10,000, we will be able to expand this vision even further.

This will enable us to:

  • Deliver at least five cultural immersion experiences in schools and community settings
  • Employ and support more Aboriginal facilitators, creating additional pathways into leadership and paid cultural work
  • Deepen the impact of our programs and extend our reach into the wider community

Reaching this goal means taking a significant step forward in our journey of self-determination—growing something that is not only sustainable, but led by culture and community.

Sharing Our “Happy Place”

Barrbunin Beek—our “Happy Place”—is a space of connection, cultural expression, and belonging.

The impact is felt by all who walk through it—the warmth, the connection, and the sense of community.

Now, we feel a responsibility to share this beyond our walls.

Through both on-site workshops and school immersions, we will:

  • Inspire young people to engage with Aboriginal culture in meaningful, hands-on ways
  • Build understanding, respect, and stronger relationships across communities
  • Create pathways for Aboriginal people to step into facilitation and leadership roles

This is about creating ripples—taking what we’ve built and sharing it out into the world, with the support of partners and sponsors who believe in this vision.

Why This Matters

There is still a gap in culturally grounded spaces where Aboriginal people can lead, share knowledge, and create opportunity.

There is also a need for greater understanding within the broader community.

We are not waiting for that change to happen—we are creating it.

Be Part of the Next Chapter

Barrbunin Beek has grown from a small group of men with a shared vision—proving that from little things, big things grow.

Now, we are a thriving community space—and we’re inviting you to be part of what comes next.

By becoming a sponsor of this campaign, you are contributing to:

  • Self-determination
  • Cultural strength
  • Education and understanding
  • Lasting impact for future generations

Your support is not just a contribution—it is an investment in community, culture, and the leadership of Aboriginal people.
