The problem

Between the 1970s and 1990s, tens of thousands of Vietnamese and Chinese families crossed oceans to rebuild their lives in Australia, and many made their home here in Western Sydney.

The elders who made that journey are now in their 70s, 80s and 90s. Their stories of courage, loss and new beginnings are rarely recorded. Their families are scattered across Sydney, Melbourne, Vietnam, China, the US and beyond, so they rarely get to tell that person, out loud, what they mean to them.

Our solution

LegaSeen Tribute makes it simple. One family member shares one private link. Relatives anywhere in the world record a short video on their phone, in their own language, with no app to download and no account. They share a message, a favourite memory, and a question they’ve always wanted to ask.

We turn their videos into a Gift Film for their elder, and keep every recording safe in a private family vault, so the elder’s voice and stories are kept for future generations.

The gap

Many migrant families don’t have the time, money or confidence with technology to do this alone. Language barriers and distance make it harder still. Without help, these stories are lost when our elders are gone.

What your support makes possible

With $10,000, we will:

1. Sponsor 30 Vietnamese and Chinese migrant families in Western Sydney to create a Tribute and Gift Film for their elder.
2. Run 1 community storytelling session for elders and their families, with local community organisations.
3. Produce 1 short documentary of one elder’s story of crossing oceans, made with a professional filmmaker.

• $4,500: Tributes and Gift Films for 30 families
• $1,000: community storytelling session (venue, interpreters, facilitation and refreshments)
• $2,500: short documentary of one elder’s story
• $1,200: rewards for our backers
• $800: platform and payment fees

It’s all-or-nothing: if we don’t reach $10,000 by 3 December, we receive nothing. Every backer in these first days makes a real difference.

Stretch goal: $15,000

15 more families, plus a community screening of the films. We’re aiming for NSW Seniors Festival in March 2027.

• $3,500 Your Parent’s Documentary: a short professional documentary of your own parent or grandparent, plus 3 sponsored families

Why me

My grandma was my only living grandparent when I was born. When she passed away, she left 12 children, more than 80 grandchildren and hundreds of photos, but most of us never really knew her life story. I never got to ask her the questions I wish I had.

Our family is now spread across Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the Philippines. Like so many migrant families, we rarely all get to say, out loud, what someone means to us.

I started LegaSeen so no family has to lose those voices. In September, my team and I won all three awards at Spark Festival’s AI for Social Enterprise Hackathon, and we’re proud to be part of the City of Parramatta’s Pitch for Good and WSU Launch Pad’s Ignition Accelerator.

I’ve already seen what happens when a whole family records for someone they love: people laugh, cry, and say things they’ve never said before. Now I want to help 30 more families do the same, while their elders are still here to hear it.
