1 in 5 Victorians can't afford a basic fridge or washing
machine. Yet every year, 950,000 whitegoods go to scrap.
Two problems that shouldn't coexist.
GOODSERCLE
is here to change that.
Good appliances shouldn't go to
waste.
Good people shouldn't go without!
A fridge that works. A washing machine that runs. They’re not
luxuries. They’re what turn a house into a home.
Help
GOODSERCLE bring them to Banyule households who need them most.
A broken fridge or a washing machine that won't run isn't just an inconvenience. For many households, it's a crisis. And for those starting over, rebuilding after displacement, escaping hardship, or simply trying to make a new place feel like home, having these basics can make all the difference.
This is exactly what GOODSERCLE was
built for. With your support, our Banyule pilot will
recover discarded whitegoods,
professionally service and
refurbish them, back each one with a
warranty, and rehome them to the
households and community
organisations that need them most.
All while cutting e-waste,
reducing emissions and creating meaningful paid
employment along the way.
You can be the reason a Banyule household gets what it needs. Help us close the circle.
Where Our Story Began ...
My name is Gauri Shah. In 2007, my partner Gurpal and I founded Sunny Electronics, a retail appliance business. It didn't take long before I started noticing something that stopped me in my tracks.
Perfectly good fridges and washing machines, sitting on the kerbside. Left out like rubbish. As a migrant, I was genuinely flabbergasted. Where I come from, these appliances are repaired, passed on and kept running for as long as they possibly can. The idea of simply discarding them was something I couldn't reconcile.
And then through the business, I started seeing it up close. Customers would buy a new appliance and ask us to take the old one away. Often it just needed a simple repair. Sometimes it was perfectly fine. But out it went. To the kerbside, to landfill, to waste.
I knew that wasn't right. So in 2011, we bootstrapped GOODSERCLE to do something about it.
'A few years ago, a St Vincent de Paul caseworker reached out to us. She was supporting a single mother who had escaped domestic violence and was rebuilding her life in a new home. She needed the basics: a fridge and a washing machine. We rehomed both.
A couple of years later, that same lady came back. Not because something had broken down, but because she trusted us. She bought a clothes dryer. The fridge and washing machine were still running perfectly.'
This moment captures everything GOODSERCLE is about. It isn’t charity. It’s dignity.
'Around the same time, a young man came through our employment program. He had been out of work and needed more than a certificate. He needed real experience, structure and a chance to prove himself. Over six months, he worked alongside our team, gaining hands-on experience in appliance handling and repair. He completed his test and tag certification. The last we heard, he was working with a franchise as a test and tag technician.'
A working fridge helped a household. A hands-on opportunity changed a life.
This is exactly what the Banyule Appliance Rescue and Rehome Pilot will do.
Too many whitegoods are still ending up on the kerbside or e-waste. Too many Banyule households, people starting over, managing on tight budgets, escaping hardship, are going without the basics. And too many people who want to work are being held back simply because they haven’t had the right opportunity.
Our $12,000 goal will:
- Rescue and rehome 35 to 40 essential appliances, fridges, washing machines and more
- Support 30 to 35 Banyule families and community recipients who genuinely need them
- Create approx 150 hours of paid, hands-on work and training for people facing barriers to employment
If we reach our $15,000 stretch goal, we can go further:
- Fund additional repairs and parts
- Extend delivery support across more of Banyule
- Add more paid participant hours
- Build a rapid response capacity for urgent household and community referrals.
A discarded fridge. A household going without. They deserve to find each other.

| 18 Years in the Making ...Gurpal and I have been doing this work together for nearly two decades in Darebin. Between us, we bring complementary skills that make GOODSERCLE work: I lead the community partnerships, compliance, circular training pathways and social enterprise side of the operation. Gurpal is the hands-on engine. With over 20 years in fridge refurbishment and recycling, he brings deep expertise in refrigerant management, degassing, safe dismantling and emissions prevention, having personally processed thousands of units. Together we have built something that is equal parts environmental mission and community service. |
We've Done This Before
The Banyule pilot isn't a leap of faith — it's the next step in a proven journey. In the past years, GOODSERCLE has:
- 🏠 Provided 4,800+ households with access to essential whitegoods
- 🌍 Reduced CO2 emissions by approximately 45,000 tonnes
- ♻️ Diverted more that 850 tonnes of e-waste from landfill
And we have the recognition to back it up:
- ✅ 2019: Accredited by Victorian Energy Upgrades, abating 11,640 tonnes of greenhouse gases through energy efficiency and refrigerator decommissioning activities
- ✅ 2021: Accredited by Sustainability Victoria under their Small Business Energy Saver Program, servicing more than 286 small businesses with energy efficient fridges
- ✅ 2023: Ran a successful pilot with the City of Darebin — refurbishing and rehoming whitegoods to more than 235 households, abating 157 tonnes of CO2e and diverting 9,500kg of waste from landfill. The pilot's success led to an ongoing partnership with the Darebin Resource Recovery Centre (DRRC) for whitegoods collection. That's exactly what we're bringing to Banyule.
- ✅ 2023 and 2024: Won RMIT University's LaunchHub program for outstanding scaleup companies addressing UN Sustainable Development Goals
- ✅ 2023: Invited to present at Planet Ark's Circularity Conference as part of Circular Economy Victoria's Business Innovation Pod
- ✅ 2024: Awarded the Jacques Nasser Fund for Innovation as part of RMIT's VentureHub program
- ✅ 2024: Won the Social Enterprise Award and named an Outstanding Enterprise across six councils in Northern Melbourne.
- ✅ 2025: One of 16 social enterprises selected nationwide for Federal Government (DEWR)WorkFoundations project to create paid employment pathways in the appliance repair sector
We've proven this model right next door. Now, with your
support, we're ready to bring it to Banyule.
