Smile Back hasn't added a story.
The idea of ‘Smile Back’ stems from being an immigrant myself, originally hailing from Zimbabwe, I have a deep understanding of the challenges faced by individuals whose parents have worked tirelessly to provide them with a better life but may struggle to comprehend or empathise with mental health issues.
Personally diagnosed with anxiety five years ago, I grappled with these challenges, particularly within a family context that lacked an understanding of mental health. Three years ago, I took the courageous step of seeking therapy, a decision that has had a profound and positive impact on my life's course.
Mental health is a silent crisis within the CALD (Culturally and Linguistically Diverse) community. Stigma, lack of access, and cultural barriers prevent young people from seeking the help they need. Many struggle in isolation, feeling unheard and unsupported. Traditional mental health initiatives often fail to engage them in a way that resonates, leaving a significant gap in support systems.
At Smile Back, we use fashion, community, and events to break down these barriers. We create safe spaces where mental health conversations happen naturally—through creativity, connection, and culture. Our luxury streetwear not only funds our initiatives but also bridges the gap between fashion and advocacy, turning every piece into a conversation starter and a powerful statement that mental health awareness deserves to be seen, shared, and embraced. Events like Smile Back Sports Day, the ‘Real Men Don’t Do Therapy’ series, and our upcoming fashion show are designed to build belonging, empower individuals, and shift perspectives.
My journey towards improved mental health has fuelled my passion for helping youths facing similar struggles. I believe in addressing mental health issues in a constructive and supportive manner, rather than turning to substances or alcohol as coping mechanisms. Smile Back is for women and especially men who often suffer and fight these internal battles alone. My aim through ‘Smile Back’ is to create a sense of community, facilitate open conversations about mental health, and combat the associated stigma so the next generation can benefit from the sacrifices made before them.
Despite growing awareness, there is still a lack of culturally relevant, engaging mental health support tailored to young people in CALD communities. Many organisations focus on clinical approaches, but Smile Back meets people where they are—on the streets, in creative spaces, at social events—making mental well-being an accessible and everyday conversation. However, scaling these initiatives requires resources and community backing.
Every person who supports Smile Back—whether through donations, sponsorships, or purchasing our apparel—helps drive meaningful change and becomes part of a growing community committed to making mental health support more accessible and inclusive. Their contribution directly funds events that bring mental health education to the forefront, provide safe spaces for open dialogue, and ensure that no one has to struggle alone. Their support turns ideas into action, breaking cycles of silence and fostering a community of resilience and empowerment.
Supporting Smile Back isn’t just about giving—it’s about being part of something transformative. Contributors receive exclusive access to our events, recognition in our community, and the satisfaction of knowing they are actively changing lives. Sponsors gain visibility within a movement that is reshaping mental health conversations. Fashion supporters receive high-quality streetwear with a purpose, wearing their advocacy with pride. Most importantly, every supporter becomes part of a legacy—one that proves mental health matters, and together, we can rewrite the narrative.
Join us in making mental health more than just a conversation. Let’s make it a movement.
