Hello,
Field+Fin is the first urban aquaponics farm in Bulanaming Marrickville, NSW.
Our farm models solutions for sustainable urban food supply by providing nutrient rich, ethically produced, low mileage, zero waste food.
This is a space for the community to gather, eat and learn how to grow and cook food.
We are also building a fire kitchen called By Campfire. This restaurant and bar will serve fresh seasonal ingredients and ethically sourced products. Yum!
We’re right in the middle of the creative epicentre of Inner West Eora (Sydney). We are passionate about arts, music and culture and will support local artists here on the farm.
We've been working hard on building this space.
Now we need your help to get to the next stage!
Vision for Field+Fin and By Campfire
Bring the Bush to the City. Our mission is to bring some of the bush life, that campfire energy, to our small little piece of the city and share it with those around us.
Take the City to the Bush. Our passion comes from going bush and visiting remote wilderness and communities. Our hope is to share some of our deep connections to these places and invite more people to become involved in some of our bush passions.
Conservation. Field+Fin founder Daz has a deep connection with Papua New Guinea. Daz and his partners create and support remote wilderness conservation areas that work hand in hand with traditional cultures, supported through ecotourism. The urban farm will send a percentage of all profits to a self managed marine sanctuary of 5 small islands in the Coral Sea.
Sustainable Urban Food. Urban farming solves many issues facing us now, and in the future, such as huge carbon emissions generated from transportation. Instead, we can grow food down the road and eat it freshly picked, just like it is meant to be.
Good Food, Good People, Good Times. We like to party, everyone does. Share a good chat, a fire, some tunes, it's so good for us all. With more and more buildings going up, we need to retain some space to gather, see the sky and share together.
Path to Success!
The current strategy is to get the farm up and running so we can share this wonderful project and delicious food with you asap. First up, we are growing fresh produce in Marrickville and on our partner farm in the Southern Highlands NSW.
We are in Stage 1 - 90% done. Estimated completion mid-September 2023.
Marrickville - Site planning, architect designs, engineering designs, DA approvals and preparation. Site secured and under lease with a great landlord. Shipping containers on site, Installing and building infrastructure for the farm and temporary kitchen, setting up the aquaponics systems, vertical gardens, raised beds and starting to build the mushroom farm containers and micro greens crops.
Southern Highlands - We have been working with our partners for many years and have done a great deal of work already. We have completed the outdoor kitchen, onsen, natural swimming pool, fire pits, large aquaponics systems, acres of garden beds and chickens. Now we are planting crops, finishing pathways and installing bell tents for overnight stays.
Your support today will help us to move into Stage 2
Stage 2 - mid-September - November 2023
Marrickville - The farm is producing microgreens, salad leaves and mushrooms. The temporary fire kitchen is ready. All Presale orders and onsite events sold during this crowdfunding campaign will be delivered .
Southern Highlands - Maintaining and harvesting the garden, and maintaining associated infrastructure. More planting and building.
Then we will move into the next stages:
Stage 3 - November 2023 onwards
Marrickville - More infrastructure is built to increase the operational capacity of the farm and kitchen. Increased production of microgreens, salad leaves and mushrooms. We start growing other types of crops. The kitchen is regularly open for events and we are selling many products commercially and to the public.
Southern Highlands - Garden is operating at full capacity. We start hosting events and retreats for F+F members and guests.
Final Build - 2024
Marrickville - We will build to the final plans (pictured below). This will allow us to operate a full restaurant and bar. The farm will reach optimal operations and we’ll be developing better ways to serve the community.

Our Goal
This is a Presales Campaign - a special invite for you to have first-round access to our produce, events and membership. This will help us to generate income while utilising our resources as mindfully as possible.
The big fundraising goal is $150,000. We could reach that if 1000 people chose to come to an event on the farm this spring.
The funding will help us with current expenses and to cover costs for the months ahead. With 2 years of commercial rent payments behind us and huge amounts of building and outlays, it's very much time to generate some income!.
You may have noticed that we've set this campaign goal to a lower amount of $70,000 because... well, we need to make sure it all gets over the line. Although we have no doubt you're as into this whole vibe as we are.

Good things about Field+Fin
The farm demonstrates how to sustainably grow food in an urban environment. Aquaponics is a closed loop system that harnesses natural processes. The plants are fertilised by the nutrients in the water from the fish tanks (aka fish-poo-goodness!). The water is filtered by the plants and the growing medium, which then cycles back to the fish tanks. We feed the fish with worms and crickets that are also farmed onsite utilising garden and kitchen waste.
Field+Fin offers multiple ways for city dwellers to experience an aquaponics set up and the fresh food it produces. This food will be served onsite, sold commercially to local cafes and restaurants, as well as to the public. However, we're not going to be over-producing just for a bottom line.
We're creating a sustainable enterprise. There will be many ways to get involved and learn how to do this type of food growing. It's about finding that special equilibrium where the ecosystems and environment are balanced, and the humans are too.
Team
Field+Fin was founded by Marrickvillian, Daryl (Daz) Byrne. He’s been running events for years at his rooftop paradise up the road (the gardens are run on aquaponics there too). Daz is a construction landscaper, vertical garden designer, photographer, conservationist and above all, adventurer.
Daz’s love of music has driven his city life. However, most of his heart lives in Papua New Guinea since he kayaked there 20 years ago. Daz now puts energy into protecting a five-island marine sanctuary in PNG. Field+Fin is his way of supporting this passion, connecting the people and ecosystems of those islands with the city and vice versa.
By Campfire is headed up by Chef Grant McGregor . A wandering chef of some repute. Worked, ate & travelled around the world. Currently splits his time between Marrickville and Japan (for now).
Daz and Grant recently brought in Marna from Artist Made . Her role is to deliver F+F to optimal operations, then build on the many more fantastic plans we have in store.
Marna has 20 years experience in arts, music, events, hospitality and purpose-led organisations. Her passion for celebrating culture, connecting communities and growing interest in micro-farming aligns perfectly with Field+Fin’s vision.
Having previously worked at Arup, Marna brings an awareness of how the urban environment must support the transition to beyond net zero. She is most excited to create a dynamic nature-focused space in her beloved Marrickville.

Southern Highlands 'In-The-Ground' Farm
Our partner farm in the Southern Highlands is called Noonameena. Most of the 100 acres are Scribbly Gum nature reserve on Gundungurra and Dharawal Country. Working hand in hand with Dana, the owner of this beautiful place, we have created some large garden beds that grow produce such as root vegetables and herbs. This is one of the places where we bring the bush to the city. And we plan to take the city to the bush for some very nice types of adventures… stay tuned!
Infinity Barramundi
Our aquaponics system uses fish to fertilise plants. These premium fish are from Infinity Barramundi, a sustainable farm built on hot springs in Victoria.
Young Henrys
Original champions of Daz and the farms. Young Henrys is an independent craft brewery and sustainability leader hailing from Inner West Sydney.

Explore PNG partners with traditional communities in coastal Papua New Guinea to invite small groups of tourists on remote wilderness expeditions.
Running limited season stays on their island marine sanctuary, Mwanewa in the Coral Sea, as well as hosting expeditions into remote wilderness areas, Explore PNG aims to promote conservation through ecotourism whilst educating and supporting local community in non-destructive sustainable economic pathways.
